Groups of 13 to 150+

Yacht charter for more than 13 guests.

Yes — you can charter a yacht for 20, 30, or 50+ guests in Miami. USCG rules cap most yachts at 12, but two paths unlock larger groups: a COI-certified commercial yacht, or combining multiple yachts into one coordinated charter.

Often, two yachts cost less than one commercial vessel — and rafted up at the sandbar, your group has more space, more swim area, and better photos.

    Regulation Explained

    The 13-guest rule, explained

Why most Miami yachts cap at 12 passengers — and the two legal ways around it.

    12

    passengers

    + crew, max

    USCG Subchapter C

A regulatory cap, not a physical one.

Under U.S. Coast Guard regulations, an "uninspected passenger vessel" — the category most private charter yachts fall into — is legally limited to 12 passengers plus crew, regardless of yacht size. A 100ft yacht and a 50ft yacht are both capped at 12 unless the vessel carries a Certificate of Inspection (COI) under Subchapter T or K, which requires additional safety equipment, periodic drills, and a higher-tier licensed captain.

That's why your 90ft party yacht with room for 50 still says "12 max."

    Two Legal Paths

    Path 01

    COI-Certified Yacht

Charter a single inspected vessel rated for 25, 49, or 100+ passengers.

    • 1Browse our fleet of COI-certified vessels (filter by "Certified for 13+")
    • 2Pick a single yacht rated for your group size (25, 49, 100+ passengers)
    • 3Book like any other charter — one captain, one boat, one invoice

Best for: 50+ guests, weddings, formal events.

    Path 02

    Multi-Yacht Fleet

Combine 2 or 3 yachts into one coordinated charter that cruises and rafts together.

    • 1Set your guest count above 12 — Fleet Builder activates automatically
    • 2Add 2 or 3 yachts to your fleet (we show capacity remaining as you go)
    • 3Submit. Concierge confirms availability across all captains within 24 hours
    • 4One contract, one deposit, one coordinated charter day

Best for: 14–40 guests, birthdays, corporate, casual celebrations. Often 30–50% cheaper per person than commercial vessels.

Sweet spot for fleet pricing. Rafts up at Haulover, plenty of swim space, no commercial-vessel premium.

    Recommended Setup

    2 yachts (75ft + 60ft) OR 1 COI yacht (90ft)

    Per Person

    $300–$430

    Total Charter

    $9,000–$12,900

Either path works. Two yachts give a more intimate vibe; one commercial yacht is simpler logistically.

    50guests

    Wedding / Milestone

    Recommended Setup

    1 COI yacht (110ft) OR 3 yachts (75ft + 65ft + 55ft)

    Per Person

    $260–$460

    Total Charter

    $13,000–$23,000

Single commercial yacht usually wins here for ceremony staging. Three-yacht fleet works for casual receptions.

    80guests

    Major Celebration

    Recommended Setup

    1 COI-certified vessel (140ft+, inspected)

    Per Person

    $300–$550

    Total Charter

    $24,000–$44,000

Size alone does not raise the 12-guest cap — the vessel must hold a USCG Certificate of Inspection. We have a small selection of COI-rated yachts in this range.

A yacht's length doesn't raise the 12-passenger limit. Only a USCG-inspected (COI) vessel or a coordinated multi-yacht fleet can carry more.

    Built for Big Groups

    Yachts Loaded for Large-Group Days

Water toys, shaded decks, and entertaining space for 13+ guests. Pair any two for a fleet — or charter a single inspected vessel.

Why Two Yachts Often Beats One Big Boat

110ft Riva yacht in Miami — large group charter option
70ft Azimut Fly — fleet pairing yacht for 12 guests in Miami
97ft San Lorenzo in Miami — popular fleet charter pairing
103ft Azimut II in Miami — large group celebration yacht

    Lower per-person cost

COI commercial vessels are scarce in Miami and command 30–50% premiums. Two private yachts often beat their per-head price for groups under 30.

    Rafted-up sandbar party

At Haulover or Nixon Sandbar, captains tie the yachts together. Your group becomes one floating venue with shared music and swim space.

    More photogenic

Two stunning yachts side-by-side make for far better drone footage and Instagram content than one workhorse commercial vessel.

    Flexible boarding

Friends can pick a yacht based on vibe — quiet boat for parents, party boat for the rest. Switch between them at the sandbar.

    Built-in backup

If one boat has a mechanical issue, you still have a yacht. Single-boat charters have no plan B.

    Same-marina departure

Both yachts depart from the same slip area at the same time. Guests don't need to know it's technically two charters.

01Can you have more than 13 guests on a yacht?
Yes. The U.S. Coast Guard limits standard (uninspected) charter yachts to 12 passengers plus crew. To carry more, you have two paths: (1) charter a COI-certified vessel (USCG inspected) that is rated for 25, 49, 100+ guests, or (2) combine multiple yachts into a coordinated multi-yacht charter (a "fleet") that departs and cruises together. YATR supports both — our Fleet Builder lets you select 2 or 3 yachts and we coordinate one captain team, one itinerary, one invoice.
02Why is there a 13-guest limit on most yachts?
Under USCG Subchapter C, an "uninspected passenger vessel" (the category most private charter yachts fall into) is legally capped at 12 passengers, regardless of the yacht's physical size. A 100ft yacht and a 50ft yacht are both limited to 12 unless the boat carries a Certificate of Inspection (COI) under Subchapter T or K, which requires extra safety equipment, drills, and a higher-tier captain.
03Is it cheaper to book one big commercial yacht or two regular yachts?
For groups of 14–25 guests, two regular yachts is almost always cheaper than one COI-certified commercial yacht — often 30–50% less per person. COI vessels are rare in Miami and command a premium. For 30+ guests, the math flips: a single 100ft+ commercial yacht usually wins on per-person cost. Our Fleet Builder shows real-time pricing so you can compare both.
04How does a multi-yacht (fleet) charter actually work?
You pick 2 or 3 yachts from our fleet, assign your group across them (e.g. 12 + 12 = 24 guests), and they depart from the same marina, cruise the same route, and anchor together at the same sandbar or restaurant. Guests can swim between boats, raft up, and share music. One concierge coordinates captains, catering, and timing — you get one quote, one contract, one charter experience.
05How much does a yacht charter for 20 guests cost?
In Miami, expect $4,000–$8,000 for a 4-hour day charter for 20 guests. The most cost-effective configuration is two yachts in the 50–65ft range. Add catering, a DJ, and water toys and you're typically at $250–$450 per person all-in — competitive with a Miami nightclub bottle service tab, with vastly more memorable photos.
06Can a multi-yacht charter raft up at the sandbar?
Yes — and this is the best part. At Haulover Sandbar, Nixon Sandbar, or off Key Biscayne, the captains anchor side-by-side and tie the yachts together (rafting). Your group becomes one floating venue: shared music, shared swimming area, easy guest movement. Most large-group customers say the rafted-up experience beats a single bigger boat.
07Do I need a special permit to charter multiple yachts?
No. You're the customer — the captains and YATR handle all coordination, permits, and dockage. You sign one master agreement that covers all vessels in your fleet.
08What about catering and a DJ across multiple yachts?
We coordinate it. You can choose: (a) one catering company splits service across all yachts at the same time, or (b) the rafted-up "main" yacht hosts food/DJ and guests rotate through. Option B is more popular and usually cheaper.
09How far in advance should I book a fleet charter?
For groups over 13 guests, book at least 3–4 weeks ahead in peak season (Mar–May, Oct–Dec). Aligning two or three yacht calendars + captains + caterers + slip availability takes more lead time than a single-yacht booking. Our concierge team can usually pull together a fleet on 7–10 days notice in shoulder season.
10Can I split the cost across multiple credit cards?
Yes — large group bookings can be split. The lead organizer signs and pays the deposit, and we can issue secondary invoices to co-organizers for their share. Talk to the concierge team when booking.
