    Understanding Yacht Charter Gratuity

Tipping on yacht charters follows similar conventions to fine dining or luxury hotel service. The crew works hard to ensure your experience is exceptional, and gratuity is a significant portion of their total compensation.

The universal guideline is 15-20% of the total charter price. For a $5,000 day charter, that means $750-$1,000 split among the captain and crew. This is comparable to tipping at an upscale restaurant, which makes sense given the personalized service, expertise, and hospitality involved.

    When and How to Tip

The best time to tip is at the end of the charter, after docking. Hand the tip directly to the captain with a brief word of thanks. Cash is preferred but card tips can be arranged. If you had multiple crew members who provided standout service, you may tip them individually in addition to the captain's pool.

    What Crew Members Expect

Professional yacht crew understand that tipping is discretionary. They will never ask for or expect a specific amount. However, they do depend on gratuity as a meaningful part of their income. A fair tip motivates excellent service and supports the professionals who make your experience possible.

    Tipping FAQs

How much should you tip on a yacht charter?
The industry standard is 15-20% of the total charter price for good service. 20-25% is appropriate for exceptional service. On a $5,000 charter, a typical gratuity would be $750-$1,000. Tipping is customary but not mandatory.
Who do you give the tip to?
Give the tip directly to the captain at the end of the charter. The captain distributes the gratuity among the crew. On larger yachts with extensive crew, you may also tip specific crew members directly for outstanding personal service.
Is tip included in the charter price?
Gratuity is typically NOT included in the base charter price. Some charter companies add an automatic gratuity (usually 18-20%), but YATR keeps pricing transparent -- the gratuity is at your discretion based on service quality.
Should I tip in cash or can I add it to the card?
Cash is preferred by most captains and crew as it is received immediately. However, many charter companies (including YATR) can process gratuity by credit card if you prefer. Ask your captain or contact us after the charter.
Do I tip differently for multi-day charters?
The same 15-20% guideline applies to multi-day charters, calculated on the total charter cost. For week-long charters, the gratuity can be substantial, and crew members depend on it as a significant portion of their income.
What if the service was not good?
You are never obligated to tip. If service did not meet expectations, a reduced tip (10% or less) signals dissatisfaction. We also encourage you to share feedback with YATR so we can address any issues with the crew.
